Our Mission:
Repairing Homes, Revitalizing Communities, Rebuilding Lives
Rebuilding Together Kent County was initially conceived as a result of efforts to respond to flood damage and destruction of homes in the Rock Hall area during Hurricane Isabel in 2004. Volunteers became aware that there were other homeowners throughout Kent County experiencing insurmountable challenges related to home maintenance, with or without a catastrophic disaster.
This small group of volunteers found a national organization that shared their vision of safe homes and communities for everyone, and in the fall of 2004, they became an affiliate of Rebuilding Together, one of the nation's largest volunteer home and rehabilitation programs - Rebuilding Together Kent County was born!
Rebuilding Together Kent County works in partnership with local community volunteers to provide home repairs, accessibility modifications and access to community resources to keep income-ligible homeowners living independently in safe, dry and warm homes.
Rebuilding Together, Inc. started in 1973 with an act of grassroots activism and community engagement in Midland, TX. A small group of neighbors realized a growing need in their community. Homes near them had fallen into disrepair and the homeowners could not afford maintenance and repairs. The founding affiliates volunteered their time and skills to rehabilitate the homes of their neighbors, the last weekend in April, and began what was known as Christmas in April. This simple act of neighbors helping neighbors inspired others to get involved and eventually spread across the country bringing together partners from various backgrounds to help their neighbors year-round.
In 1988, the organization opened its national office in Washington, DC. With the growth of the organization came change, including a new name; in the mid-2000s, Christmas in April renamed itself Rebuilding Together. Today, Rebuilding Together operates nationwide with over 130 affiliates.
